Additional Industry Requirements HughAFP
Baseplate Grouting & Painting
Baseplates and Foundation bolts should be grouted in concrete to ensure alignment is maintained and vibration is absorbed.
When grout has thoroughly dried an approved oil based paint shall be applied to the exposed faces of the grout in order to prevent air and moisture coming into contact with it
Battery Stand & Hold down Clamp
Only sealed maintenance-free batteries are acceptable.
Batteries need to be positioned side by side and not stacked, located on stillages
A built-in hydrometer shall be provided to enable the state of the batteries to be determined.
Braided Hose Fuel Line
Fuel line shall be of Flame resistant reinforced flexible hose or suitable material listed for this service.
Pipes shall not be made from plastic, rubber and pipe joints may not be soldered.
Piping for any fuel line shall not be copper, cast iron, aluminium or galvanised tubing.”
Provision shall be made for the retention of any spilled fuel using a brick or similar material bund which
shall contain not lessthan the contents of the fuel tank plus 10%. Environmental requirement to prevent spillage of Hazardousmaterial. Safety Precaution to prevent Injury by slip
Test Arrangement Labels
The Test Arrangement labels indicate the Pressure at which that specific pump will kick in to maintain system pressure.
If the actual needed cut in and out pressures are not mounted at each tier, the responsible person will not be able to verify that the cut in and out pressures recorded actually corresponds to what the system was designed to do.
All occupied buildings that exceeds 30m in height shall be equipped with a category M and category L fire detection system, installed by a competent person and in accordance with SANS 10139. When there is no sprinkler system installed throughoutthe building, the fire detection system installed must be a L1 system, meaning that every office shall have a detectorinstalled
Low Fuel Sensor
The float switch is a device used to determine the level of Fuel in the tank, and automatically sends a signal to the Annunciator. The float switch is installed in the tank and wired to the annunciator panel. The float ball of the level switch rises or falls with the fuel level. When fuel level drops, the signal is closed causing the ball to fall and thussending a low fuel signal to the panel.Person responsible for pump house will receive a low fuel signal. When site refuels the Tank, the signal will open causing the ball to rise and cancels the low-level fuel signal to the panel.
Hydrant Flow Test
Fire Hydrant Flow tests determine the Flow rate and pressure supplied by council.
Fire hydrants need to be tested regularly to ensure that they are capable of providing water at an acceptable pressure and flow rate for Firefighting operations.
1 Hydrant needs to provide a flow of 1200 l.min
2 Hydrants in operation should provide a flow of 2400 l.min.
3 Hydrants in operation should provide a flow 3600 l/min.
Jockey Anti-Hammer Timer
A Jockey’s sole function is to maintain system pressure. If system has a leak pressure will drop Jockey will kick in, bring pressure up and kick out again. Because of the leak the Jockey will immediately start up again, causing the fast-moving water coming into sudden contact with the still standing water in the Pipe. This is known as Water Hammer and causes great damage to pipe work and Pumps.Amakosi Fire Pumps installs an Anti-Hammer Timer into the Jockey Panel. This allows the Jockey to run for an Extra 6 – 12Seconds eliminating the Water Hammer. This prolongs life of pipe work and equipment.
An Orifice plate or Direct Reading Flowmeter is designed to verify pump duty. It is critical to know and confirm that your pump is performing as designed, as this will indicate whether it will be capable to control a fire. If the site does not have an Orifice Plate or Direct Reading Flow Meter Installed, you will not be able to prove flow to your Insurance or Industry Regulator.
PumpDuty Verification Flow Test
Flow tests are performed to verify pump duty. Flow Testing is an Insurance, ASIB as well as a Legal requirement. Testing must be done by a trained individual, and records of the Test must be kept. Possible Legal action might occur in the event of loss or damage to property andor lives. This will also verify working order of all related mechanical components.
Remote Alarm Panel
The Pump house is normally situated too far from any reacting personnel and will not be able to hear the audible alarms in the event of a Fire. They will also need to know of any equipment failures or when Diesel runs out, in order to keep the building protected as well as the longevity of the Fire Equipment. Our remote alarm panel can connect multiple pump houses on same facility and can be placed where responsible person can see and hear alarms in the event of an emergency or equipmentstarting. Unit transmits WIRELESS and has a transmitting radius of up to 4kilometers.
SMS Module Retro Fit
It is not a standard supplied component inside the older model panels as the rule only came out in the 11th Edition. Amakosi Fire Pumps offers a state-of-the-art Retro-Fit Panel. The data logger shall log 3 500 events that are downloadable to analyse the fault pattern in the event of damage or loss to property. In the event of logging weekly testing this is a great tool for management to be notified if testing is taking place. SMS unit and Data logger which will log the events in the pump house, and you have a traceability of events in the event of fire or damage to property
The data logging module should have the ability to log all events that occur within the pump house facility, and the ability to send pump house alarms to personnel and or a computer via SMS. The data logger logs 3 500 events that are downloadable to analyse the fault pattern in the event of damage or loss to property. In the event of logging weekly testing this is a great toolfor management to be notified if testing is taking place. Customer will also have traceability of events in the event of a fire. In any event of faulty equipment inside the Pump House or any fire emergency event the client will be notified via sms.
Spare Fuel Drums
Spare fuel must be kept on hand all times.
In case of emergency there is seldom time to leave site to collect more fuel for the engine, and a major safety risk to re-enter the site in case of fire.
When engine runs without fuel starter will continuous run through the 6 crank cycle causing starter to burn or batteries to get damaged, with spare fuel available on site, this can be avoided if refuelled timeously
Test Arrangement Instruction Chart
Test on Automatic Pumps shall include instructions to: Simulate the condition of automatic starting. Recording cutting in and out pressures of pumps at each tier. Testing of Jockey Pump. Testing of Diesel or electric Pump. Testing of the Water Motor Alarm. This is an intensive and complicated test, without training and Instructions the responsible person will either only perform part of the test or avoid testingcompletely, Leaving the site open to serious risk.
Weekly Testing is a Legal requirement as per SANS 10400 and SABS 10287. It is also an Insurance as well as any international standards like ASIB NFPA FM LPCB Testing must be done by a trained individual, and records of the Test has to be kept. (ASIB 8003) Insurance may not pay out if record of Weekly testing cannot be provided. Possible Legal action might occur in the event of loss or damage to property and or lives.
Tank Inspections & Refurbishments
Concrete, Galvanised sectional steel & welded tanks. The tank must be constructed and suitably protected against corrosion in such a way, and from such materials as to obviate the need for emptying, cleaning, maintenance or repair to the fabric of the tank for a period of not less than 15 years although the fabric of the tank shall be examined every 3 Years.Bladder tanks Where bladder tanks or tanks that use an internal lining are used the manufacturers recommendations must be taken. Amakosi recommends an inspection every 10 Years. Weather elements damages the water tanks on the outside. Rubber seal inside the tanks tend to start leaking after a time. Tank overflows due to corrosion on the ball flow valve. Water Quality leads to internal corrosion, Rust particles in the water will pass through the system and cause serious damage to Pipes, Pumps and related equipment. Amakosi Fire Pumps provided a service to inspect and refurbish water tanks back to proper standard.
